Characterization, preparation and industrial applications of hydrochloric acid

Hydrochloric acid, scientifically known as hydrochloric acid, is an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride (HCl). It is a colorless, transparent liquid with a strong pungent odor and high corrosiveness. Concentrated hydrochloric acid has a mass fraction of about 37% and is extremely volatile, so that when a container containing concentrated hydrochloric acid is opened, small droplets of hydrochloric acid produced by the combination of hydrogen chloride gas and water vapor in the air can be seen to form an acid mist.

Hydrochloric acid is a strong monobasic inorganic acid with a wide range of industrial uses, such as in the manufacture of metal chlorides, dyes, and a variety of chemicals, as well as playing a key role in the “pickling” process of steel. In addition, hydrochloric acid is a major component of stomach acid, which promotes food digestion and protects against microbial infections.

Due to its strong corrosive and irritating properties, exposure to hydrochloric acid can cause serious injury to the human body, including burns and ulcers in the eyes, skin, respiratory and digestive tracts. Therefore, proper precautions should be taken and good ventilation should be ensured when using hydrochloric acid.
